How we chose these Charities

The Outer Banks Visitors Bureau created a list of about 95 different Outer Banks charities, and lists them on their website. Our team went through this list using data supplied by Candid Beta, and sorted the charities by numerous metrics, including (a) if they are a registered 501(c)(3), (b) if they have their form 990 on their website, and (c) their revenue, net assets, and combined revenue & net assets. If a charity is not shown on Candid Beta or is not locally based, it is not included in the analysis.

Why we have these categories

We chose to sort the charities into various categories based off of each charity’s mission. Each category has at least one charity with a form 990 on its website.

What is a 501(c)(3) and a form 990?

A 501(c)(3) is an IRS designation that means donations to a charity are generally tax deductible by the donor. A form 990 is a publicly available form that a charity has to fill out annually which states financial information about that charity.
